Square tiers serve ~25% more per size. Ask your baker about a "kitchen cake" — a plain sheet cake served from the back to stretch a smaller display cake.

How wedding cake servings actually work

A "wedding serving" is the bakery industry standard slice: 1" wide × 2" deep × 4" tall. That's smaller than a birthday-cake slice and explains why a 10" round cake serves 38 people for a wedding but only 20 at a birthday.

Round tier servings:

  • 6" → 12 servings
  • 8" → 24 servings
  • 10" → 38 servings
  • 12" → 56 servings
  • 14" → 78 servings
  • 16" → 100 servings

Most couples want the photo-friendly look of 3+ tiers even with smaller guest counts. Ask about dummy tiers (foam under fondant) to get the height without the cost.
