UK couples getting married in Spain

British couples are the largest group marrying abroad in Spain. Here is the legal route that actually works, what it costs in pounds, and how the paperwork and timings really run.

The route almost every UK couple takes

Spanish civil marriage normally requires one partner to be registered as resident in the municipality, and the process runs through the local Registro Civil in Spanish. Rather than fight that, the standard approach is: sign the legal marriage at a UK register office, then hold the real celebration — a symbolic or religious ceremony — in Spain. Guests cannot tell the difference, and you avoid months of residency paperwork.

Catholic church weddings are a separate case: they are legally recognised in Spain, but require baptism certificates, a pre-marriage course and paperwork routed through your UK parish and the Spanish diocese. Start that 9–12 months out.

Compare that with an average UK wedding at £21,500 for 80 guests — a Spanish wedding with a smaller guest list often costs the same or less, with three days of celebration instead of one.

UK paperwork checklist

  • Give notice at your local register office (29 days' notice, £42 each) and marry legally in the UK before you fly.
  • Bring the marriage certificate with you if your venue or celebrant asks for it.
  • For a Catholic ceremony: baptism and confirmation certificates issued within six months, plus the expediente matrimonial through the Spanish parish.
  • Travel insurance that covers wedding attire and supplier deposits.
  • Check passport validity — at least three months beyond your return date and issued within the last ten years.

Practical things that catch UK couples out

  • Spanish IVA. Quotes may exclude 21% VAT. Always ask for the IVA-inclusive figure.
  • Noise curfews. Many Andalusian and Balearic municipalities cut outdoor music at midnight or 1am. Confirm in writing.
  • Deposits in euros. Use a low-spread transfer service; bank card payments on a £20,000 spend can cost hundreds in FX.
  • August heat. Inland Andalusia hits 40°C. May, June, September and early October are the safe windows.
  • Guest attrition. Plan for 25–35% of invitees declining a destination wedding.
