Getting married in Germany
Bavarian fairytale castles, Rhine river vineyards, Black Forest manors — what a Germany wedding actually costs and how foreign couples can legally tie the knot.
Can foreign couples legally marry in Germany?
Yes — but the legal ceremony must happen at the Standesamt (civil registry office). Paperwork takes 4–8 weeks and requires a Ehefähigkeitszeugnis (certificate of no impediment) from your home country, apostilled and translated. Most foreign couples have a symbolic ceremony in Germany and a legal one at home — much simpler.

What to know
- Polterabend: the night before, guests smash porcelain — a German tradition couples often keep.
- Standesamt slots in popular cities (Munich, Berlin) book 6+ months out.
- VAT (19%) is included in venue quotes — confirm with vendors.
- Best months: May, June, September. Avoid Oktoberfest weeks in Bavaria (hotel prices triple).
