Wedding celebrant cost in Australia

What a marriage celebrant charges in 2026, exactly what sits inside the fee, how NOIM timing works, and when a registry office ceremony makes more sense.

What the fee should include

  • Lodging and checking your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).
  • Verifying identity documents — passport or birth certificate, plus divorce decree or death certificate if applicable.
  • Writing the ceremony, including the two legally required monitum wordings.
  • A rehearsal, on site where practical.
  • PA system and microphone for outdoor ceremonies.
  • Registering the marriage with your state Births, Deaths & Marriages office within 14 days.

The legal timeline

  • 18 months to 1 month before: lodge the NOIM with your celebrant. One calendar month is the legal minimum.
  • Before the ceremony: sign the Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage.
  • On the day: celebrant, both partners and two witnesses aged 18+ sign three certificates.
  • After: order the official certificate from your state registry — roughly A$60–A$70. The decorative certificate you receive on the day is not the legal one.

How to save without downgrading the ceremony

  • Book a weekday or off-peak date — many celebrants discount Monday to Thursday.
  • Hold the ceremony at your reception venue so there is no travel fee or guest transfer.
  • Skip the rehearsal if your ceremony has fewer than four moving parts.
  • Use the venue's existing PA rather than paying for a second system.
