Getting married in Portugal

Portugal is Europe's most-booked destination wedding country for 2026 — here's what it costs, how the legal piece works, and where to actually get married.

The 60-second answer

A Portugal destination wedding for 80 guests runs €32,000–€55,000 all-in. Comporta and the Douro are the premium picks; the Algarve delivers the best value. Legal civil ceremonies require a Portuguese Conservatória do Registo Civil filing 4–6 weeks out — most foreign couples do a symbolic ceremony in Portugal and the legal one at home.

Cost by region (80-guest weekend)

Legal requirements for foreign couples

  • Symbolic ceremony: no paperwork — the couple marries legally at home, then holds the meaningful ceremony in Portugal. Used by ~90% of foreign couples.
  • Civil ceremony in Portugal: both partners file at a Conservatória do Registo Civil with birth certificates (apostilled, translated), a "Certificate of No Impediment" (or equivalent), and passports. Allow 4–6 weeks.
  • Catholic ceremony: requires baptism certificates and pre-Cana paperwork from the home parish.
