How to budget for a wedding
A seven-step method that works whether you are spending dollars, pounds, euros or Australian dollars — build the ceiling, split it by category, and stop the slow leak that blows most wedding budgets.
Quick answer
How do you budget for a wedding?
Start with a hard ceiling you can genuinely fund, lock the guest count, then split the total by category — roughly 28% venue and rentals, 26% catering and bar, 12% photography, 9% flowers, 8% attire, 6% music, 5% stationery and extras, and a 6% buffer you never touch. Track deposits separately from balances and reforecast after every signed contract.
- Venue & rentals

- 22–30% of total
- Photography & video
- 10–15% of total
- Flowers & styling
- 8–10% of total
- Buffer to ring-fence

Step 1 — Set a ceiling you can actually fund
Write down three numbers: what you already have saved and are willing to spend, what you can add each month before the date, and any family contribution that has been confirmed out loud. The sum is your ceiling. Do not start with an average from an article — start with your own arithmetic.
Step 2 — Lock the guest count before anything else
Catering, bar, rentals, stationery, favours, transport and even venue choice all scale with headcount. A 20-guest cut usually saves more than every clever DIY idea combined. Decide the number first, then shop venues that fit it.
Step 3 — Split by category percentages
| Category | Share of budget |
|---|---|
| Venue & rentals | 25–30% |
| Catering & bar | 22–30% |
| Photography & video | 10–15% |
| Flowers & styling | 8–10% |
| Attire & beauty | 8% |
| Music & entertainment | 6% |
| Stationery, cake, favours | 4% |
| Buffer | 5–8% |
Step 4 — Ring-fence the buffer and never touch it
Service charges, supplier travel, overtime, wet-weather hire, extra transport and the last-minute plus-one all arrive in the final eight weeks. A 5–8% buffer is the difference between an adjustment and a crisis.
Step 5 — Track deposits separately from balances
Most couples know their total but not their cash-flow. Record each supplier's total, what is paid, what remains, and when the balance falls due. That single habit prevents the classic three-balances-in-one-month squeeze.
Step 6 — Reforecast every time you sign something
After each contract, update the real number against the plan. Overspend in one category means an explicit cut in another, decided the same week — not silently absorbed.
Step 7 — Cut from the top of the list
- Move to a Friday, Sunday or off-season month: 15–30% off venue hire in most markets.
- Swap plated service for family-style or buffet.
- Shorten photography to six or eight hours.
- Reuse ceremony florals at the reception.
- Invite fewer people to the meal and more to the evening.

How do you budget for a wedding from scratch?
Add your savings, your monthly contributions until the date, and any confirmed family gift. That total is your ceiling. Lock the guest count, split the ceiling by category percentages, ring-fence 5–8% as a buffer, and only then start shortlisting venues.
What percentage of a wedding budget goes to each category?
Venue and rentals 25–30%, catering and bar 22–30%, photography and video 10–15%, flowers and styling 8–10%, attire and beauty 8%, music 6%, stationery, cake and favours 4%, buffer 5–8%.
How much should I save per month for a wedding?
Divide your target total, minus existing savings and confirmed contributions, by the months until your date. A 25,000 wedding 15 months out with 8,000 already saved needs roughly 1,100–1,200 a month.
What is a realistic wedding budget in 2026?
In the US, $30,000–$45,000 for about 120 guests. In the UK, £21,500 for about 80 guests. In Australia, A$36,000 for about 100 guests. Each figure swings 40% either way by city, so use the local benchmark rather than the national average.
How much of a wedding budget should be the venue?
25–30% if venue hire and catering are billed separately, or 50–60% combined when the venue supplies the food and drink. If venue hire alone is over a third of your total, the rest of the plan will be squeezed.
What is the cheapest way to cut a wedding budget?
Guests first, then the date. Every ten guests removed saves the full per-head cost across catering, bar, rentals, stationery and favours. Moving off a Saturday in peak season takes 15–30% off venue hire in most markets.
Who traditionally pays for the wedding?
There is no longer a default. Most 2026 weddings are funded by the couple with a partial contribution from one or both families. Confirm the exact figure and the payment date in writing before you build it into the ceiling — a vague promise is not budget.
How big should a wedding contingency fund be?
5–8% of the total. Service charges, supplier overtime, wet-weather hire, extra transport and late plus-ones almost always land in the final eight weeks.
Should a wedding budget include the honeymoon and rings?
Keep the honeymoon separate — it has a different timeline and different funding. Include rings, attire alterations, marriage licence or notice fees, and supplier tips, because they compete for the same money on the same dates.
How do wedding planners build a client budget?
Planners work backwards from the guest count and the venue's per-head minimum, allocate by category percentage, then track each supplier's total, deposit paid, balance outstanding and due date in one place — which is exactly how the workspace in Wedding Planner Central is built.
