Getting married in the UK

From a London townhouse to a Cotswolds manor to a Scottish castle — the 2026 cost picture and legal-notice rules for getting married in the United Kingdom.

The 60-second answer

The average UK wedding in 2026 costs £24,500 for 80 guests. London and the Cotswolds push past £45k; Scotland and Northern England land near £18k. England & Wales require both partners to give Notice of Marriage in person at their local register office 29 days before the ceremony. Legal requirements

  • England & Wales: Notice of Marriage in person at your local register office, 29 days minimum, valid 12 months. Both partners must attend.
  • Scotland: M10 form by post or in person to the local registrar, 29 days minimum. Marriage can take place almost anywhere — beach, castle, mountainside — with an authorised celebrant.
  • Foreign couples: bring passports, proof of address, and any divorce/death certificates for prior marriages. EU citizens may need additional CNI paperwork.

What makes UK weddings different

  • Exclusive-use weekends are the dominant format — Friday arrival, Saturday wedding, Sunday brunch.
  • Marquee weddings on family or estate land are a major value play (£8k–£14k saved vs hotels).
  • Off-season (Nov–Mar) drops country-house pricing by 30–40% with full availability.
